Today’s attorney focus is on Mr. Jeff Newell

Jeff Newell is a native to Lafayette, Indiana and ‘an old hometown boy.’ He attended Lafayette Jeff High School, studied undergraduate at Purdue University, and law school at Indiana University. He joined our firm in 1980 after spending two summers as a clerk in the office. He’s remained at our firm throughout his thirty-five year law career.

Mr. Newell has developed a reputation for his work with creditor’s rights and collections and is one of a only a handful of attorneys in the community who handle landlord and tenant evictions and collections. He has built up his practice as being detail-oriented and prompt in taking action.

Mr. Newell currently focuses on these areas of law:

• Creditor’s rights
• Landlord-tenant law
• Foreclosures

Additionally, Mr. Newell has remained active in the community through his involvement with Habitat for Humanity, the Boy Scouts, and helping organize the Gus Macker basketball tournament.

Why did you become an attorney?

Mr. Newell shared that he had always wanted to be an attorney. He distinctly remembered being in ninth grade and having to write a career report about who he wanted to be when he grew up. He chose to be an attorney and interviewed a local, prominent attorney in town to learn more about the career.

He explained that he has always felt a strong connection to the study of law because of his interest in history, particularly the Revolutionary War. Law has always aligned closely with our history and helped explain and shape historical events. Mr. Newell pointed that out that many famous people in our history were prominent lawyers in their time.

His work in creditor’s rights and collections was never planned, but has become a role he has grown into over the years, as he continues to work with more clients throughout the Lafayette community. When he first joined Ball Eggleston’s firm he dabbled in some other areas, such as family law and litigation, but became more interested in creditor’s rights and collections after he started working with a bank client. He has become more experienced in his line of work over the years and is respected in his practice. In the past, he has spoken at events for the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum (ICLEF), specifically on collections and landlord-tenant law.

His work in creditor’s rights and collections is a niche practice area that is different from what the other attorneys do in the office. Mr. Newell explained how the work is detailed, and many times ongoing as he partners with local businesses, offices, and landlords to routinely help them with collections or evictions. However, Mr. Newell enjoys the job and has gained expertise and a reputation throughout Lafayette for his work with landlord-tenant law.
